Hosted by the Zane Bennett Gallery, the discussion will cover the history of Polish and Eastern European filmmaking within the socio-political context of Soviet Communist dominance and the current climate and trends in filmmaking since the Solidarity Movement, Gorbachev’s reforms in the Soviet Union and the eventual fall of Communism in the region.

Saturday, October 22

ARTISTS IN CONVERSATION:

Kirk Ellis and Andrea Meditch

10A @ Evoke Gallery

130 Lincoln Avenue, Suite F, Santa Fe, New Mexico 87501

Join award-winning writer/producer Kirk Ellis (John Adams, Judy Garland Me and My Shadows, Anne Frank) and Documentary Executive Producer Andrea Meditch (Buck, Man On Wire) for a conversation about the considerations and challenges at play in shaping a compelling story within the constraints of truth.

Kirk has a proven talent for crafting memorable and critically acclaimed narrative dramas based on historical and biographical fact. Andrea enjoys a hard-won track record for carving the path through mountains of documentary footage to the heart of a story – stories that bring both box office magic and critical recognition. This pairing promises an informed and passionate dialogue about creative process, navigating the multiple truths present in non-fiction work, ethical questions related to the subjectivity of “truth”, and the intrinsic manipulative nature of filmmaking.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION:

EDITOR HUGHES WINBORNE, “THE FINAL REWRITE”

3P @ Charlotte Jackson Fine Art

In The Railyard at:  554 S. Guadalupe, Santa Fe, NM 87501

The 12th Annual Santa Fe Film Festival presents Academy Award-winning editor Hughes Winborne (Crash, The Help, Sling Blade) speaking on the art of motion picture editing.

Writer/Producer Kirk Ellis speaks with Hughes about his career, artistic collaboration, his experience with the dynamics of independent vs. studio pictures and negotiating the politics of the cutting room.

Other areas they may address include:

  • How the editor works artistically in service of the director’s vision, while simultaneously bringing a much needed objective eye to the footage
  • Creating nuance, meaning and performance that may not have been captured on the day
  • The editor’s role in guiding a director and/or producer towards surrendering to the footage they have and not the footage they hoped to get

Hughes will share personal experiences of his journey up the ranks, editing his first feature, and achieving ‘first-call’ status in the industry. An audience  Q & A will follow.

Sponsored in part by the New Mexico Post Alliance.
