Marsh<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>In jurisprudence, reparation is replenishment of a previously inflicted loss by the criminal to the victim<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, reparation is payback. But while this movie is indeed about righting wrongs, it is about so much more.<\/p>\n<p>The filmmakers know about our meager understanding of the film\u2019s title, and deftly play with our expectations. As a result, we willing follow them through the complicated maze of the main character\u2019s mind expecting \u2014 well, not what we get.<\/p>\n<p>And I for one was so excited to be mislead: the payoff is sweet and sad and way more memorable for it.<\/p>\n<p>REPARATION is a multi-award-winning indie film about an Air Force veteran with a three-year memory lapse who gets a visit from an old friend, who is a payback seeker.<\/p>\n<p>REPARATION stars Marc Menchaca (<i>Homeland<\/i>), Jon Huertas (<i>Castle<\/i>), Virginia Newcomb (<i>Moonlight Mile<\/i>), and first-timer Dale Dye Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>In it\u2019s 2015 festival spin, it has most recently won 5 awards at Breckenridge Film Festival: Best Actor (Menchaca), Best Supporting Actor (Huertas), Best Actress (Newcomb), Best Child Actor (Thomas), and Best Screenplay.<\/p>\n<p>Where SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK was cheeky and upbeat on the \u201cjust getting out of a mental institution\u201d note, REPARATION is dark and suspenseful. It is a balancing act between what is family, what is truth, what is friendship \u2014 and what our minds can do to us.<\/p>\n<p>This film has so many nicely interwoven themes.\u00a0 Chief among the issues is the one of Bob (Manchaca), a veteran living with post-traumatic stress and memory loss, but it really isn\u2019t what you think. And that is delicious.<\/p>\n<p>Our minds can be a dangerous, dark place of dying while struggling to live. Both father and daughter in this story live with their respective traumatic shadows in entwined, meaningful ways that drive the drama between all of the other characters.<\/p>\n<p>Indie films can get bogged down with their own gravitas. But REPARATION never does: it stays crisp, clear, and somehow linear in its track-skipping narrative.<\/p>\n<p>I am intentionally vague about all of this because I really want you to see this film. I\u2019m not even saying that because I\u2019m writing a review to get you to go see it. Truly. Pick this one if you don\u2019t pick any others.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As Bob\u2019s daughter Charlotte (Thomas) comes to learn, \u201cEvery time something happens that knocks us out of balance, we try doing something that will knock us back in.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s CRASH for the soul.<\/p>\n<p>REPARATION will make you feel perfectly unbalanced and slightly on your toes until the very, circle-closing end.<\/p>\n<p>I would love to tell you that you will feel whole for seeing this well-written film, but you won\u2019t. But I can assure, you will not stop thinking about it. Or Bob.
