In 1913,\u00a0novelist,\u00a0Joyce<\/span> Cary,<\/span> went to Nigeria to join the British colonial civil service.<\/span>\u00a0Bruce Beresford, in his first film since\u00a0Driving Miss Daisy<\/em>, has adapted Cary’s novel, Mister Johnson<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Taking place in British-colonial Nigeria, Mister Johnson<\/em> is the\u00a0story of the intertwined relationship between a young Nigerian clerk (Maynard<\/span> Eziashi) and\u00a0Harry Rudbeck (<\/span>Pierce<\/span> Brosnan<\/span>),\u00a0the British district administrator he works for<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0When a bookkeeping error is discovered, Johnson takes the rap for Rudbeck and is dismissed. Years later, when the men reunite to build a road, history repeats itself with tragic consequences. The cast includes Edward Woodward, who plays\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sargy Gollup,\u00a0a drunken Brit who\u00a0sometimes beats his African servants “for their own good.”<\/p>\n
