(October 7, 2011) \u2013 Diane Schneier Perrin, Executive Director for the newly revamped Santa Fe Film Festival (SFFF), today announced the program for the 12th edition of SFFF (Thursday, October 20 through Sunday, October 23, 2011) including the U.S. premiere of British director Terence Davies&#8217; postwar romantic drama \u201cThe Deep Blue Sea&#8221; starring Rachel Weisz and French-Canadian film \u201cMonsieur Lazhar,\u201d directed by Philippe Falardeau, Canada\u2019s official submission to the 84th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.<\/p>\n<p>For the new edition, the festival will expand to four days and increase the number of features, shorts and panels while maintaining the mission of establishing the Santa Fe Film Festival as a premier boutique international film festival.<\/p>\n<p>On Opening Night, the festival will screen \u201cThe Artist\u201d directed by Michel Hazanavicius.\u00a0 Starring Jean Dujardin, who won Best Actor at this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival, Berenice Bejo and featuring John Goodman, the film is about a silent movie star facing the twilight of his career and the dawn of a new romance as Hollywood welcomes the emergence of the talkies. The festival\u2019s Closing Night film is \u201cMonsieur Lazhar\u201d. \u201cNinja Kids\u201d (2011), a family friendly high energy comedy from cult phenomenon director Takashi Miike (13 Assassins), will also receive a special screening at Santa Fe\u2019s historic Lensic Performing Arts Center.<\/p>\n<p>Santa Fe Film Festival Board Chairman, Nick Durrie commented regarding the relaunch of the festival, \u201cAs part of a strategic plan for a gradual, multi-year expansion of the festival, a new group of business-oriented board members, advisors, and volunteers have come together with a strong commitment to a fiscally sustainable model.\u00a0 Diane Schneier Perrin is the pivotal person in our development plans and we are delighted to have her on board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Veteran film producer Diane Schneier Perrin (Kathryn Bigelow\u2019s \u201cBlue Steel,\u201d Oliver Stone\u2019s \u201cTalk Radio,\u201d Barbet Schroeder\u2019s Academy Award-winning \u201cReversal of Fortune\u201d) and Executive Director of SFFF, states, \u201cSanta Fe stands as one of the great centers for film enthusiasts in the world.\u00a0 For this very special 12th edition of the festival, we wanted to find an exceptional opening film, and we got our wish with \u201cThe Artist\u201d.\u00a0 We are also thrilled to be presenting some notable premieres such as \u201cThe Deep Blue Sea\u201d and the Canadian foreign language Oscar entry \u201cMonsieur Lazhar\u201d. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brent Kliewer, programmer for The Screen on the campus of the Santa Fe University of Art and Design is SFF\u2019s new Director of Film Programming.\u00a0 Kliewer comments, \u201cWe have a strong program with films such as Finland\u2019s Oscar entry \u201cLe Havre,\u201d from legendary director Aki Kaurism\u00e4ki, Iran\u2019s Oscar entry \u201cA Separation\u201d from Asghar Farhadi and Turkey\u2019s Oscar entry \u201cOnce Upon A Time in Anatolia\u201d directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes.\u00a0 We will also spotlight New Mexico filmmakers with a screening of \u201cWild Horses and Renegades\u201d directed by James Anaquad Kleinert, a beautifully photographed and passionately expressed chronicle of the plight of the American wild horse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2011 SFFF\u2019s sponsors include Century Link, Casas de Santa Fe, New Mexico Lighting &amp; Grip, SAG Indie, Kowboyz, Tamalewood, and Santafe.com.\u00a0 Partial funding was granted by the City of Santa Fe Lodger\u2019s Tax, the City of Santa Fe Arts Commission and the New Mexico Tourism Department.<\/p>\n<p>For more information regarding the full program, general admission tickets to individual films, including Opening and Closing Night, non-screening events such as panels, workshops and parties go to <a title=\"The home of the Santa Fe Film Festival\" href=\"http:\/\/santafefilmfestival.com\/index\">http:\/\/santafefilmfestival.com\/index<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>SFFF 12th EDITION HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>US Premieres<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Deep Blue Sea\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SFFF will present the US premiere of the feature film \u201cThe Deep Blue Sea\u201d (2011) directed by master chronicler of post-War England, Terence Davies.\u00a0 Davies adapts Terence Rattigan\u2019s 1952 play about a woman whose overpowering, obsessive love alienates the men around her and destroys her well-being.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonsieur Lazhar\u201d<br \/>\nSFFF will present the US Premiere of \u201cMonsieur Lazhar,\u201d Canada\u2019s official submission to the 84th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The film won the Audience Award at this summer\u2019s Locarno Film Festival and was named Best Canadian Feature at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.\u00a0 Written and directed by Philippe Falardeau, \u201cMonsieur Lazhar\u201d tells the story of an immigrant substitute teacher (played by Monhamed Fellag) who brings emotional stability to a middle school class shaken by the suicide of their well-liked teacher.
