SANTA FE, NM– The Santa Fe Film Festival announces the appointment of Brent Kliewer as its Director of Programming.

“Brent is a world-class film curator bringing his encyclopedic knowledge of and passion for international and independent cinema to the Santa Fe Film Festival. Brent knows Santa Fe audiences and has the vision to create an extraordinary program for the 2011 festival.” said SFFF Executive Director Diane Schneier Perrin.

Kliewer has been programming films for Santa Feans since 1982. An internationally known film curator, Kliewer founded the Jean Cocteau theatre in 1983 and in 1986 began a decade of building the film program at the Center for Contemporary Arts. His extensive knowledge of the history of world cinema and contemporary works led to a ten-year run as film critic at the Santa Fe New Mexican and five years as an adjunct professor in critical studies in the Moving Image Arts Department at the College of Santa Fe.

In the late nineties, Kliewer was instrumental in the fundraising for and design of The Screen, Santa Fe’s premier cinematheque where he continues to serve as the Director of Film Programming.

“For more than a quarter of a century I have enjoyed a special rapport with film-going audiences in Santa Fe. We’ve viewed thousands of films together. Santa Fe stands as one of the great centers for film enthusiasts in the world,” said Kliewer “In this new role, I look forward to expanded opportunities to create that intimate communal experience that is movie going and that film festivals embody through seeing new work, talking about the work, celebrating the classics and engaging with new languages of technology and artistic expression.”

The Santa Fe Film Festival will kick off its festival season with a free pre-festival open- air community screening on Friday, September 23rd in partnership with the Santa Fe Railyard Community Corporation and Heath Productions.

The 2011 Santa Fe Film Festival will run October 20-23 as a signature event of the Santa Fe Arts Festival.
