KCET Cinema Series producer Michele Garza is heading over to the Santa Fe Film Festival this week. She’ll be reporting back with pictures from the event, as well as other behind-the-scene goodies!
This week marks the opening of the 12th annual Santa Fe Film Festival held in the exquisite 400-year-old capital of New Mexico. Santa Fe is world renown as a premiere city for art and culture and a haven for artists and writers for countless centuries. It is truly one of the most inspirational and beautiful places on earth. The primary focus of the Santa Fe Film Festival has been to highlight the best of top international films along with the work of local New Mexican filmmakers. It now has expanded its repertoire to include more feature films and the best of short films.
The festival opens on October 20 with Michel Hazanavicius’ “The Artist,” which stars Jean Dujardin, who recently won Best Actor for his performance in the film at this year’s Canne Film Festival. The film was shot completely in black and white and is a contemporary tribute to the golden age of the silent movies. There is a lot of excitement about the film and it is expected to be considered for a possible Oscar or Golden Globe Award.
“The Artist” also just happens to be the Opening Night film for the NOHO KCET Cinema Series, which opens on Tuesday, October 25 at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in North Hollywood. Following the KCET screening of the film, attendees will have the incredible opportunity to hear a post-screening Q & A with director Michel Hazanavicius and the stars of the film Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo. The film has its theatrical release on November 23 in the U.S.
Other noteworthy films at the Santa Fe Film Festival include the U.S. premiere of British director Terence Davies’ postwar romantic drama “The Deep Blue Sea” which stars Rachel Weisz, and the French-Canadian film “Monsieur Lazhar,” directed by Philippe Falardeau which is Canada’s official submission to the 84th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.
I’ll be on hand this week at the Santa Fe Film Festival and I look forward to sharing with you my impressions of the film festival, films, and panels with the filmmakers.
