Who says Saving the World Can’t Be A Blast? After a wildfire nearly turns his family (and goats) into refugees on their remote New Mexico ranch, former suburbanite Doug Fine sets out to discover food security around the world via hemp & other crops.
Bestselling author Doug Fine is a comedic investigative journalist, hemp farmer and solar-powered goat herder. His latest book, American Hemp Farmer (now in-development as a funny hemp and food security television series), was nominated as the Santa Fe Reporter’s 2021 Book of the Year and helped shepherd the regenerative farming renaissance. His focus for 15 years has been sustainable living for regular folks, including his Boston Globe bestseller Farewell, My Subaru. Doug has cultivated hemp food for farm-to-table products and seed-building in six U.S. states, has worked with multiple Native American projects, and his own hemp seeds have been used to clean soil in a New Mexico university study. His other books include Too High to Fail and Hemp Bound. Willie Nelson calls Doug’s work “a blueprint for the America of the future.” He’s appeared on Conan and The Tonight Show, reported from five continents for NPR and testified before the UN about freedom to farm. Director Statement
The AMERICAN HEMP FARMER series asks, “Who says Saving the World Can’t Be A Blast?” After a wildfire nearly turned my family (and goats) into refugees on our remote New Mexico ranch, I (former suburbanite Doug Fine) set out to discover food security around the world via hemp & other crops.
The Pilot tells the tale of our family’s effort to learn food security & hemp cultivation from experts around the world-& then to teach it to other new farming families, all with humor & fun. The Pilot takes us from George Washington’s Mount Vernon to the International Space Station, with a massive wildfire & bear attack threatening everything sacred to Doug at one point in this thrilling and funny Pilot.
The Pilot episode includes incredible footage of hemp fields in action fighting climate change (the fields visibly thin smoke from rampant nearby wildfires). We learn how to support the independent farmers on the front lines of climate mitigation. Then I find myself in colonial era clothes, cutting myself with a sickle at the first hemp harvest in 200 years at George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate. After that, a very sore me gets a CBD massage. Revived, I harvest hemp with and jam to the unforgettably lit music of musical guest farmer Particle Kid. AMERICAN HEMP FARMER with Doug Fine: Who Says Saving the World Can’t Be A Blast?
In each episode of American Hemp Farmer, Doug takes viewers on a wild travel adventure that provides real examples of this new farming movement. Suburbanite-turned-hemp-farmer-&-goat-herder Fine travels from Native American Tribal lands to George Washington’s Mount Vernon & back home to his Funky Butte Ranch. “You’ll learn from my mistakes,” says Fine. “I’m telling these stories because my family’s survival and yours may depend on it-plus being outside is the route to a fun life.”
