Solo Adventure Around the World 1963

During years of wrongful imprisonment in East Germany, Karl Johannsmeier developed the strong desire to see the world. After immigrating to the US, Karl embarked on an almost unplanned journey in 1963. This film documents Karl’s visually evocative and philosophical journey and unites material from journals, autobiography, and his authentic 8mm and still images for the first time in 60 years. Karl’s story testifies to the power of tenacity and optimism, and despite almost unbearable costs, the vital importance of taking chances and daring to dream.
